A Louis Vuitton trunk that turns into a table is up for auction in Meaux

The auctioneer says no other example is known.

A green Louis Vuitton expedition trunk from around 1912 that unfolds into a table goes up for auction on Friday 16 October at EMME Enchères in Meaux, with an estimate of €5,000 to €6,000.

The trunk is a "Champs Élysées" model in green Vuittonite canvas, with lozine edging, beech slats, brass studs and a zinc base, and measures about 70 by 43 by 40cm closed. A table top in the same green canvas folds out of the lid on a locking mechanism, with one of the support brackets notched to hold the lid open. The rope handles were made to take a bamboo carrying pole. For the models' sake, please don't tell Pharrell.

The front still vaguely carries an old marking, "Commandant Mascarel". The trunk has come down through the family of René Georges de Mascarel de La Corbière (1847 to 1937), a doctor in a cavalry regiment who spent long periods on overseas deployments. Lise Fromentin, an auctioneer at the house, has described it as the only known example to date; the catalogue calls it extremely rare. It shows wear and some repainting on the canvas, and its internal frame is missing.

A second Vuitton trunk from the same family, a Monogram laundry trunk also from about 1912, is offered as lot 128 with an estimate of €2,000 to €3,000.

The sale is the first at the auction house's new premises, 65 Avenue de l'Epinette, Meaux.
